Read Me First…..

Hopefully you’ve found this post before you get too involved in the rest of the blog.  It’s important for me that you understand where I’m coming from.  My “About” tells you who I am but not why.  Like most people I had jobs to put myself through college and I had dreams of working in the film industry.  But money was my enemy and I couldn’t afford to attend the film schools I was accepted into.  I worked in law firms and in other corporate environments as an assisant.  Eventually I made my way back to the family business.  My father had decided to strike out on his own and wanted help.  Green as could be my brother and I stepped up to the plate as CFO and CEO respectively.  After nine years I moved into an “as needed’ capacity as President of that company and I still do the same work for them today.  I left the family business to start a new business with my significant other, an automotive repair facility specializing in Porsches.  Knowing nothing about the automotive repair business I was, yet again, green.  But this time I had already acquired the management and operations skills so the learning curve wasn’t as steep.  After five years, Exotic Motorwerks, continues to grow and make money.  Currently I separate my time between the family business, Exotic Motorwerks, an ebay Porsche parts store, a new pet products venture and my consulting.  Clearly I have a lot to do but I truly enjoy it, all of it, good and bad.  The process of starting and running a business is my calling.  Even at the worst of days, I’m enjoying the challenge of finding solutions.  This is the purpose of the blog, an extension of my consulting work, to help people through the maze.

Now, it is important to understand as well that when I first started out in business I saw things differently than I do today.  Time, knowledge and understanding has taken me to the place from which I operate now.  I like to call myself a capitalist :-) and that simply means that I am in business to make money.  No other reason.  I have no altruistic motive.  Charity is a whole different department for me and I like to keep it separate from my work.  I know sometimes it can be offensive, this idea that money is my business purpose but legally, as an officer of four different corporations, I have a fiduciary duty to make sure the owners make money.  If you are in business for some purpose other than to make money, this is not the blog for you.

The purpose here is to get you thinking about how to make more money.  That means talking about business, marketing, customers, widgets, etc. as the purpose of making money and being profitable.  Profitability is BIG.  If sales are $300,000 and your paycheck is $10,000….. something is wrong and we need to fix it.

More profit equals more time for yourself, your family, your hobbies.  Although I am busy, I still spend time enjoying life, I run trails with my dog, I race my Porsche, I read and sometimes…. I relax!
