Take a look around. What are people doing, what are people saying, what do people want? This is NOT about creating a new product or service, although it could be. This is about taking what you do or provide and positioning it in a way that aligns with what people really want and what they are looking for.
I heard a statistic awhile back about how many people actually are driving around with their cell phones pressed to their ears, but…. they aren’t talking to anyone. Really. They just want you to think they are. So what do these people really want? What do they need? Do you have something to sell them?
I heard a story about a guy who is driving in traffic; seriously thick traffic. Every morning. What could I sell all these people? What do they need? What do they want? He asked the question. His answer…. get out of the traffic. So he stood at the on-ramp with a sign, pay me ten bucks and I’ll be your carpool passenger. Brilliant. Solves a problem.
Take a look around, ask the question, solve the problems. If you are in the construction business and people aren’t building, you need a new model. What do they need? Maybe it’s time to be a remodeling business.
Another place to look is where people are spending their money. Can you help them spend it more wisely? Can you help them invest it? Can you help them make better choices about the money they are spending? Or can you sell them something they want to buy now? If consumers are spending money in a specific place, can you gear your product or service to align with that spending?
Things only seem bleak or tough when you are in the wrong market. In the right market you can make lots of money. In many places, although the price of homes has dropped and the market is flooded, one place they can’t keep homes in stock is the multi-million dollar home market. If you are in the real estate or related industry what are you doing to get your foot in that market?
The reality is that there are opportunities everywhere. How do you find those opportunities? Keep an open mind and read, read, read. I can’t stress this enough. The more information you have the better able you are spot an opportunity when you see one.
